Coloured 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the limbic system of the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that causes loss of brain mass. Here, there is atrophy (shrinking) of the left hippocampus (bottom centre, multicoloured) and asymmetrical dilation of the temporal horns (grey). This brain shrinkage leads to memory loss, confusion, personality changes and ultimately death.
